MAMCO × SaSA
Joana Hadjithomas & Khalil Joreige
Located in the heart of the Old Town, on the Esplanade Théodelinde, the Saint-Antoine Archaeological Site (SaSA) is a new cultural space dedicated to Geneva’s archaeology. Blurring the lines between a museum and the cultural scene, it invites visitors to rethink the relationship between heritage preservation and its promotion.
For its opening, following more than a decade of excavations and construction, the site commissioned MAMCO to propose a specific artistic intervention. The choice fell on the work of Joana Hadjithomas & Khalil Joreige, and more specifically on a series of works related to archaeology.
Joana Hadjithomas & Khalil Joreige (born in 1969 in Beirut) have, over the past three decades, developed a multidisciplinary, research-based practice that confronts reality with the emancipatory power of the image, fiction, and poetry. With *Palimpsests*, *Time Capsules*, and *Trilogies*—works presented at the SaSA—they bring buried stories to the surface: by collaborating with professionals in preventive archaeology and drawing inspiration from methods specific to geology, they offer representations that challenge the writing of history, the perception of the invisible, and the vertigo of the long term.
The exhibition is curated by Lionel Bovier, at the invitation of SaSA.
