Yvan Salamone
The Sonia Zannettacci Gallery is pleased to present a collection of recent watercolors by Yvan Salomone.
Anonymous buildings and soulless industrial sites, set against nondescript landscapes, are the defining elements of Yvan Salomone’s watercolors. Contrary to this almost off-putting literal description, the artist reveals to us a different vision, a different setting: through delicacy, velvety texture, lightness, and the subtlety of colors; through the vibrations he infuses into them; through the life that emerges through traces of water; and through a wholly subjective interpretation, Yvan Salomone makes us forget the mediocrity inherent in the structures depicted, transcends the banality of the subjects, transfigures objective reality, and takes us to unexpected and fascinating lands.
The title of the exhibition, 2611, evokes the artist’s decision, made as early as his first watercolors in 1991, to give them a title consisting of 11 letters by using the 26 letters of our alphabet, which generates not only a nearly infinite number of possibilities but also nonsensical, outlandish titles that have no connection to the subject and further underscore the artist’s desire to distance the object from any observed reality.
