MARK BRUSSE
Sometimes I wonder

"Mark Brusse sees the outside world through the eyes of the inside" - Pierre Restany

A fellow traveler of the Nouveaux Réalistes and Fluxus, Mark Brusse has, from the outset, created assemblages of heterogeneous objects with no objective connection, which, diverted from their original function, find a new meaning.

Although he left his native Holland in 1960 to make Paris his home, he has retained from his maritime origins a taste for travel, a desire to discover other cultures, to meet and work with people with different skills. Whether in Indonesia or La Réunion, Tokyo, Tokoname, Quito, Seoul or Cotonou, he stays long enough to collaborate with local craftsmen and immerse himself in their techniques and customs to paint or make works, here in ceramics or wood, there in stone or bronze.

Whether on canvas or three-dimensional, Mark Brusse's assemblages invariably take us into the unusual world of his dreams - waking dreams, he assures us, which he carefully transcribes.

In the disconcerting dream territories he reveals, ladders are raised towards bunches of fruit that a rabbit wants to reach, clouds peer down at us with penetrating yet benevolent gazes, while hands reach for a sky animated by multiple moons. Here, dreams are never nightmares, but only tenderness and smiles.
