Galerie Grand-Rue

The Grand Tour

The Galerie Grand-Rue is presenting a selection of works on paper focused on the Grand Tour.

You will discover Swiss artists that travelled to Italy, such as A.L.R. Ducros (1747-1810), Franz Keisermann (1765-1833) and Salomon Corrodi (1810-1892). You will also be able to admire pieces by Louis-François Cassas (1756-1827), David Roberts (1796-1864), Edward Lear (1812-1888) and Amadeo Preziosi (1816-1882), who travelled to a range of locations including Italy, Egypt, the Holy Land, Constantinople and Greece. Gouaches by the Neapolitan School will be on show, including a nice group of works by Giuseppe Scoppa.

One of the highlights of the exhibition will definitely be the impressive series of four watercolours on etched outline by Ducros, which represent views of Rome. Ducros was born in Switzerland but, like many artists, he travelled to Italy to learn his craft and settled in Rome in 1776. He produced numerous watercolours of the city and was associated with an engraver, Giovanni Volpato (1735-1803), who helped him to create amazing coloured prints which were then sold to travellers of the Grand Tour.
