In the early 1960s, artists embarked on the path of an entirely new figuration, Narrative Figuration, combining memories and visions of the past with images of current events taken from magazines, comics, or advertisements; others, the New Realists, worked by diverting products (posters, instruments, objects) from consumer society; still others let their brush move freely on the canvas to then find and identify familiar shapes. But all have in common this work of recycling and diversion of objects and images that our exhibition highlights.
